But when the sky darkens and the prospect is war
Who’s given a gun and then pushed to the fore
And expected to die for the land of our birth
When we’ve never owned one handful of earth?

The Workers’ Song

Words & Music : Ed Pickford
Lyric as sung by Dick Gaughan

Come all of you workers who toil night and day
By hand and by brain to earn your pay
Who for centuries long past for no more than your bread
Have bled for your countries and counted your dead

In the factories and mills, in the shipyards and mines
We’ve often been told to keep up with the times
For our skills are not needed, they’ve streamlined the job
And with sliderule and stopwatch our pride they have robbed

But when the sky darkens and the prospect is war
Who’s given a gun and then pushed to the fore
And expected to die for the land of our birth
When we’ve never owned one handful of earth?

We’re the first ones to starve the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie-in-the-sky
And always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat’s about

All of these things the worker has done
From tilling the fields to carrying the gun
We’ve been yoked to the plough since time first began
And always expected to carry the can

All us ex soldiers who fought for queen and country and received our war disablement pensions deserve it we dont deserve to be discrimanated by the goverment they award us the pension but dont tell us it has to keep our everyday living and only get the first £10 pounds maybe when recruiting they should say fight for queen and country if injured your only worth a tenner this pensions is to make our lives more easy to handle and help with our medical conditions dla is a component for illness that is not counted as income so why should our medical pension be taken into account lets stand up for our rights i have been in contact with msp also the news papers that im waiting to hear from lets high light to the public and let them see how the gov helps its countries heros like a piece of discarded meat and left to rot

I wish you could hear me screaming. God how I’m so ashamed of living in this country. Funny how the find millions to send to other countries when there’s a crisis. Fucking country’s gone to shite. British folk moan about it but have no sodding umph or back bone to stand up to this bleeding government.:(
