“The incapacity benefits, the lone parents, the people who are self-employed for year after year and only earn hundreds of pounds or a few thousand pounds, the people waiting for their work ability assessment then not going to it – all kinds of areas where people are able to have a lifestyle off benefits and actually off conditionality”

~ Lord Freud

Living on benefits is a lifestyle choice?

IT’S A LIE.

More than 80% of benefit claimants are aged over 35.

The vast majority of unemployed claimants have worked, and paid taxes, for years and are now on benefits due to redundancy, sickness, disability or having to care for someone.

Millions more are receiving benefits due to poverty wages.

People won’t work because benefits are too high?

IT’S A LIE.

Average benefits amount to £3,400 a year.

These people are living in poverty.

Since 1997, benefits have fallen sharply year on year in real terms. In 1971, JSA equalled 20.9% of the average wage.

Today, it is worth 10.9%, virtually half what it was.

“If they think people can have a comfortable life on £65 a week benefits when VAT has been raised and heating bills have gone up, maybe the unemployed should be running the country, instead of MPs who claim thousands in expenses.”

e-petition - Stop Unfair Re-assessments For Disabled People

Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

Stop the unfair and cruel re-assessments via ATOS for disabled people currently on Incapacity Benefit. ESA is a flawed benefit, and puts terrible pressure and stress on vulnerable people, putting people who cannot work on lesser benefits and applying sanctions. Let disabled people decide for themselves if they can work, they and their carers know best.
