A DAD whose son died after his incapacity benefits were wrongly stopped slammed the Department for Work and Pensions for getting his name wrong on a condolence letter.

Cliff Scott received a payment for the benefits owed to his son for the four weeks from when they were cancelled to his death in January.

But in the letter sent out to confirm the payment the DWP offered their condolences for the death of Clifford Scott – not his son Mark.

Mark Scott, 46, was passed as fit to work by job centre doctors despite a medical record of severe anxiety, epilepsy, panic attacks and alcoholism.

He died in his Southport flat in January from pneumonia.

Earlier this month an independent tribunal ruled the Department of Work and Pensions’ decision to stop Mr Scott’s employment support allowance was incorrect after Cliff, 74, launched an appeal.

Angered by this latest case of “incompetence” Mr Scott said: “The DWP sent me a payment for the benefits.

“The covering letter was sent to Clifford Scott, which is me, and said ‘we are sorry to hear about the death of Clifford Scott. We will make a payment of £186.87 into your chosen account for the late Clifford Scott.’

e-petition - Stop Unfair Re-assessments For Disabled People

Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

Stop the unfair and cruel re-assessments via ATOS for disabled people currently on Incapacity Benefit. ESA is a flawed benefit, and puts terrible pressure and stress on vulnerable people, putting people who cannot work on lesser benefits and applying sanctions. Let disabled people decide for themselves if they can work, they and their carers know best.
