The current union is in trouble.

Perhaps a way forward would be for the United Kingdom to re-organise.

Move the capital city to Edinburgh, including all the ministries and associated quangos.

Change the voting system, so the rest of the UK will only get the government they vote for if it is voted for by Scots voters.

Change the focus of government development policy to ensuring the development of infrastructure in the Edinburgh area in preference to elsewhere.

Build fast rail links from Edinburgh to Newcastle and Glasgow to Manchester/Liverpool to help development of those areas.

Allow the South East of England to be run from Westminster, funded by a formula-based budget.

Try it for 300 years and see how it works out.

I’m sure it will create a strong and successful union.

  1. I’ld like a Celtic Alliance – Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Cornwall – to which Northern and Midland regional assemblies would be welcome to join. Genetically, most in u.k have ancient british genes, with most anglo-saxons living in south east.

    • This sounds like a “counterfactual” science-fiction story I read once; I forget the name of the author; the point of divergence from factual history was King Athelstan losing the Battle of Brananburgh in 937 A.D(which he won in our reality); consequently the British Isles were dominated by the “Celtic Confederation”(Alba, Cymru, Eire & Kernow) and with northern England & East Anglia part of “Greater Denmark” (as “the Danelaw”) with the remaining rump England as the “Republic of New Saxony”.

  2. you might get your wishes sooner than you think, but not in the way or form you want. everything the tories are doing, particularly in
london, indicates that they are ethnically cleansing the southeast of poor and potemtially labour voters; their intention is clearly to hive off the southeast, or even just london, as an independent state on the lines of hong kong and singapore, leaving the rest of the former uk to stew.

  3. “The US economy is already in shambles, with bond and stock markets propped up by massive and historically unprecedented Fed money printing pouring liquidity into financial asset prices. This month at the IMF annual conference, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said that to achieve full employment in the US economy would require negative real interest rates. Negative real interest rates could only be achieved by eliminating cash, moving to digital money that can only be kept in banks, and penalizing people for saving.

The future is developing precisely as I have been predicting.”

  4. In the cartoon series “Judge Dredd”, Britain consists of an independent city state of London, or “Brit-Cit”, with the ruling class living in the centre, or “The City”, an impregnable financial fortress, with the rest of the city a giant shantytown inhabited by the rich’s servants; think Johannesburg under apartheid! the city is surroiunded by a mile-high Wall, surmounted by searchlights and gun towers; the rest of the country, or “The North”, is inhabited by the unemployable, fugitives, outcasts, mutants, etc; sounds like the script that the Tories are working from!

  5. Looks a bit “Game of Thrones” to me; like medieval Europe if Christianity had never existed; think “Age of Conan”.

e-petition - Stop Unfair Re-assessments For Disabled People

Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

Stop the unfair and cruel re-assessments via ATOS for disabled people currently on Incapacity Benefit. ESA is a flawed benefit, and puts terrible pressure and stress on vulnerable people, putting people who cannot work on lesser benefits and applying sanctions. Let disabled people decide for themselves if they can work, they and their carers know best.
