The economics of dicing with death

By Mike Oliver 13th November 2013 in Disability Now

Mike Oliver looks at the link between the struggling economy and the devaluing of our lives and asks if they are really out to kill us?

Two studies published this year have confirmed an uneasy feeling I have had for a while; namely that Britain has become a dangerous place for disabled people to live in. The first comes from the Strathclyde Centre for Disability Research which, through a detailed study of disability coverage in newspapers, suggest that disabled people have become modern day ‘folk devils’.

The second study, published by MENCAP, suggests that more than 1200 children and adults with learning disabilities died simply because they didn’t get the right health care. When you put these studies together, it is clear that we live in a culture of death-making as far as disabled people are concerned.

You may think I have taken two unrelated studies and used their findings to draw unwarranted conclusions, but there are lots of other examples which support my theory.

It’s not just the ‘do not resuscitate’ policies that many of us fear every time we go anywhere near a hospital. There are also the written protocols that exist in many health authorities which effectively allow disabled children and adults to be starved and dehydrated to death – even if those protocols are wrapped up in the benevolent language of early non-intervention or end of life policies.

Nor can we expect any significant protection from the law. It’s not just about the lack of protection offered to unborn impaired children when compared to children without impairments either. When disabled people are murdered, often by close relatives, the killers inevitably get lower sentences and sometimes are not sent to jail at all. Nor are we properly protected by the law on hate speech because there have been very few prosecutions and some disabled people have been harassed to the point of suicide.

The recent changes to the benefit system, a system which is supposed to support us in times of need, are also responsible for this death-making. Figures published by the Department for Work and Pensions show that 10,600 people died during, or within six weeks, of being put through the work capability assessment (WCA). Expect these figures to rise considerably as the personal independence payment (PIP) programme of assessments is rolled out.

Despite all this, we still see attempts to change the law to make it easier to kill us almost every year; some disabled people even collaborate in the process. And when they don’t get their way, they often pop off to Switzerland or Holland to get the job done amidst a blaze of sympathetic publicity.

All this is not entirely unrelated to what’s happening in the economy. As global capitalism continues to flounder under the massive burden of economic debt it has got itself into, there is no quick fix around the corner. As we are increasingly portrayed as ‘worth less’ it is only a little space on the computer keyboard before that changes to ‘worthless’. And there are many lessons in our history that show that when groups are seen by the rest of society as worthless, then the future is not very bright.

We can’t rely on the politicians to protect us either because they are partly responsible and even collude with this death-making by averting their gaze from what is really happening to disabled people in Britain today. Not that overt death-making policies will ever appear in their manifestos but neither did they appear in the manifesto of the National Socialist Party in Germany and we all know what happened there.

When I put all this together I’m left with the haunting question: am I being paranoid or are they really out to kill us?

I have been thinking im paranoid all my life, but at the age of 46 I think I just cant cope outside my own front door, yes I suffer? from mental illness, all my life I have been put on sick and that i can cope with. What i cant cope with is how evil this goverment is and how easily the public are to condem us.It seems like it didnt take joe public too long to write us off!

  2. PAULA says:

THESE BASTARD POLITICIANS HAVE ALL GOT SHARES IN ATOS, BLOODY HYPOCRITES, IT MADE ME LAUGH WHEN HE DID HIS SPEECH IN PARLIAMENT TO CAMERON TO GET RID OF ATOS, IT WAS HIS BLOODY LOT THAT INTRODUCED THEM, HE GIVES LESS OF A SHIT THAN CAMERON IN REALITY, WHO WOULDN’T ON THREE GRAND A WEEK!

    1. ephemerol9 says:

Actually it was Labour that brought Atos in first-no surprise there. We have to look outside this country to intrnational laws/human rights people Not any politics here

JJ. Thanks for that because I wondered
about that too..and not just disabled ..consider Boris plan to cut fire stations in london putting us at risk..then hunt attempt to close Lewisham A&E ward .
Plus NHS privatisation using cherry picking of easiest to treat leaving those with complicated health problems to rot or get treated by an NHS cash starved and staff cuts …

my personal belief is that the government is out to kill by stealth people who are at most risk those that live alone those who have no family are good targets as they will have no support and easily slip through the radar

it will defiantly be the survival of the fittest along with those who are best able to fill the DWP forms correctly and for everyone else it will probably be the end of life

  5. Angel Stephens says:

    Hi,
This does not surprise me in the least. My husband & I are both severely disabled. we have been abused by carers, care agencies, social services & occupational therapists since 2005.
They all just seem to attack the disabled on everything, as of life wasn’t difficult enough for us. This is all they do is put us at risk, its because they do NOT care, all they care about is lining their own pockets so they don’t have to worry about things like this

  6. kasbah says:

I agree. I think they are doing everything in the power to make us go away. They are doing as has been done since history was recorded-seeing disabled people as “other”, seeing us as useless as did Hitler, who described disabled people as “worthless eaters”
In the last Conservative Government their strategy was to scapegoat lone parents. Now it it our turn. This lot are actually instrumental in causing thousands upon thousands of deaths. If they were concerned, they would be changing the policies that are causing this, directly or indirectly. So, yes, they are out to do-away with us.

There is an excellent book written by Katherine Quarmby called “Scapegoat-why we are failing disabled people”, which examines the torment we have had to face throughout history-in both official and unofficial contexts. Its very well researched and it will make your boil, as it did mine.

We need to oust this murdersome Condem government. I have won two Tribunals but it still makes me jump out of my skin whenever a brown envelope arrives..

Sometimes the depths of depravity that the DWP will try to sink to reach another “nadir”………………………….

Just had a letter from somebody called Charlotte Trusler who works at the Blackpool benefits office.

It’s quite handy her living miles away on the opposite coast to me, as it gives her the anonymity, the cloak of darkness, that enables her to send out sanctions to an unknown, that will further destroy his life……………………….

To call someone heartless, evil, and productivity driven, would be an understatement. She is the face of uncaring Britain, fuck you jack, i’m alright!

Driving a family into destitution while reaching her sanction targets for the month is the norm, nowadays.

Why should she care about a worthless cripple who pisses himself?

Her letter makes fascinating reading, but before i continue i would like it known that i attended an ATOS medical and was found fit for work……….
They took away my incapacity benefit altogether….

    ………the letter states;

Mr Reynolds is entitled to the higher rate of mobility component from and including 14/11/2002,because he is virtually unable to walk considering the distance, speed, manner and time he is able to walk without severe discomfort.

Mr Reynolds is entitled to the lower rate of care component because he cannot prepare a cooked meal.

Mr Reynolds has back problems, rheumatoid arthritis, hearing problems and bladder problems.

A DECISION WAS MADE TO SUSPEND MR REYNOLDS BENEFIT WAS MADE ON THE 24/7/2013 BECAUSE HE HAD NOT COMPLETED AN INQUIRY FORM.

IT IS NOT DISPUTED THAT MR REYNOLDS HAS DISABLING CONDITIONS, HOWEVER MR REYNOLDS DISABILITIES ARE NOT AT ISSUE IN THE DECISION UNDER APPEAL.
THAT DECISION IS BECAUSE MR REYNOLDS FAILED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT WAS REQUESTED ON BEHALF OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE.

……….please enjoy your Christmas Charlotte. As for us at the other end of your brown envelope, don’t shed a single tear, you are only doing as instructed…………..

……..no income, no heating, no seasonal goodwill, just a chore to stay alive.

My family would like to extend their thanks for all you have done………..

HAVING STUDIED YOUR CASE, I CANNOT SEE THAT YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG WHATSOEVER.

IF YOU INFORMED THE POWERS THAT BE, THAT YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE NOT CHANGED, YOU HAVE COMPLIED BY THE LETTER OF THEIR, (THE DWP’S) LAW.

ON EVERY GOVERNMENT WEBSITE IT STATES CLEARLY THAT, THE CLAIMANT MUST TELL THEM IF ANY CHANGES OF CIRCUMSTANCE OCCUR, THEREFORE YOU HAVE FULFILLED YOUR OBLIGATION IN FULL.

I SUSPECT THE QUESTIONNAIRE THAT THEY SENT YOU, ASKED FOR A SIGNATURE.
I WOULD ADVISE ANYBODY NOT TO SIGN THESE DOCUMENTS AS YOU ARE ENTERING INTO A HIDDEN CONTRACT THAT HAS BEEN PURPOSELY DRAFTED TO FORCE YOU INTO A DEEPER AGENDA THAT REMOVES MORE OF YOUR FREEDOMS.

PS THEY USED THIS CON TRICK TO CIRCUMVENT THE LAW AND PUSH CLAIMANTS OFF INCAPACITY BENEFITS AND INTO MEDICALS WITH ATOS, AFTER WHICH THEY WERE FOUND FIT FOR WORK AND HAD THEIR BENEFITS STOLEN. ESA, THEFT FROM THE WEAKEST!!!

…………ALWAYS READ WHAT THEY SEND YOU. BY SIGNING YOU ENTER INTO A CONTRACT, WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORITY, THEY ARE SHAFTED.

  8. Toddy says:

If Mr. Reynolds has had an injury that prevented him from working as far back as 2002, then it is plainly obvious, even to the thickest of people, that his disability is not, and never will improve.

Whoever, Charlotte Trusler is, one thing is certain, she ain’t human.

What possible information, could the DWP, want after someone on sick has been incapacitated for eleven years?

    The mind boggles!

This is just another form of torture and harassment on somebody less able to defend themselves. Bullying of a person, who is able, is thoroughly disgusting, bullying of someone not able, is surely a criminal matter that should be dealt with by the police.

Christmas is a time of the year which everybody should have the right to enjoy. It is not a privilege bestowed by how wealthy someone is.
More and more we are seeing the poorest hit by the actions of sanctions. Have the people of Britain not seen the abject poverty and destitution that many are being forced into?

How is it possible to leave a disabled man and his family without money to live on?

This incident makes me sick to my back teeth and warrants an investigation immediately.

Modern Britain, what a fucking joke!
To say the DWP and ATOS have blood on their hands is an understatement.

  9. GEOFF REYNOLDS says:

    TAKEN FROM JOHNNY VOID;
Another tragic suicide has been reported which appears to be linked to the brutal Work Capability Assessments used to strip people of benefits by declaring them ‘fit for work’.

According to South East London newspaper, the News Shopper, Victor Cuff, aged 59, hung himself in May after his sickness benefits were cut. The newspaper reports that Mr Cuff had previously had suffered from depression and an inquest into his death heard that he had been “feeling down” and was having money problems after his sickness benefits were reduced.

This is the second suicide linked to withdrawal of sickness benefits which has been reported in just one week. On Monday the Bristol Post featured the story of Jacqueline Harris who took her own life after being found ‘fit for work’ resulting in her benefits being slashed.

Anyone who claims these suicides are not linked to welfare reforms has probably never been poor. The trauma of poverty can be devastating and perhaps the worst part is looking to the future and seeing little way out. For those suffering from depression – and many people without any money end up suffering from depression – the feelings of hopelessness can be even more acute. People on sickness benefits were poor already. To make them even poorer, via a system of inhuman and crude computer based tests, is breathtaking cruelty.

Attitudes towards mental health are hopefully slowly changing. Several high profile people have spoken out about their own experiences and been well received by most of the public. There is no doubt that this has helped remove some of the stigma associated with mental health. But sadly this seems to only apply to the rich or famous. The same newspapers who praise the bravery of well known personalities like Stephen Fry and Alistair Campbell accuse poor people with mental health conditions of being scroungers and benefit scum.

Few people are depressed enough to qualify for sickness benefits anymore. The vicious regime run by French IT firm Atos has declared hundreds of thousands of people with mental health conditions ‘fit for work’, often even against the advice of their own doctors.

One of the most serious symptoms of depression is suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Not everyone will report these to the Jobcentre, and even if they do they are unlikely to receive any real support. They certainly are unlikely to get their benefits back, which is what they need.

It is hard to imagine a more callous system than one which requires people who claim they are feeling suicidal to prove it, often at a series of repeated assessments. Yet that is the way people with no money now face being treated if they expect to be able to eat whilst they manage their condition. These deaths are far from the first tragic events linked to welfare reform and sadly they will not be the last.

(above pic from a memorial service held by disabled campaigners outside the offices of Atos, the company responsible for carrying out the Work Capability Assessment)

    1. GEOFF REYNOLDS says:

Another of the victims that can be firmly linked to the inadequacy of BILL GUNNYEON of the DWP.

Elevated to the position of Chief Medical Officer and yet, still fails to spot the escalating death tolls that are directly linked to his department and the evil unleashed against those who are considered vulnerable.

A murderer by association to the policies he permits………

  10. AL says:

I suggest you check your prescription compatability carefully before you just swallow what you are given. I’ve been a bit poorly. And reading the leaflet, could have been worse.

Pit that advice with the duty of ESA claimants to take anything and everything their GP says will help their condition or cure them (up to but not including Major surgery) or be treated as though they are or have taken said curing advice, and lose their eligability to benfits accordingly.

People can also be sanctioned for making theirselves sicker so careful with the old self harm boys! I wondered if blindly taking everything the quack offers, is willfullying making onesself sicker, resulting in the need for a little light sanctioning or if over a slightly longer time the ‘Cure’ would have it’s desired effect and I would naturally be removed from benefits anyway.

Be afraid, be very afraid. You are damned if you do and damned if you dont. I’m not even being paranoid. There simply is no need anymore.

  11. GEOFF REYNOLDS says:

Geoffrey .. Dig deep into the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (registered as an independent charity) and you will find that they too are a member of the same Atos family along with their partner the Royal College of Physicians of which the FOM is a faculty member of, and living rent free in the same accommodation.. By both groups distancing themselves and pertaining to be a different organisation from Atos/Unum they can gain additional seats on government advisory panels, give support to policies, and be additionally consulted on new legislation to give strength to the intended changes., all whilst being part of that same group.

In 2009 the FOM held their 30th Anniversary celebration at the House of Lords supported by their sponsors Serco and Atos Healthcare..

Occupational health services serving more than 1,000,000 Government and private employees had achieved SEQOHS accreditation by October 2012. this is managed by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) on behalf of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). Staff working for some of the country’s biggest employers are receiving occupational health advice and support from accredited services; this includes 1,000,000 staff looked after by ATOS healthcare. A hint came from Cameron when he said “We are all in it together.”.

This is where this country is going:

    TITICUT FOLLIES (1968)
    Produced and directed by
    • Frederick Wiseman
    Documentary
    84 minutes
    Roger Ebert
    October 8, 1968
Frederick Wiseman’s “Titicut Follies” was filmed in 1966 at the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane at Bridgewater, Mass. It was shown at the 1967 New York Film Festival, had two limited runs in New York and — aside from a few screenings before film societies — has had no other distribution. This is its first commercial booking outside New York.
It is not hard to understand why this is the case. “Titicut Follies” is one of the most despairing documentaries I have ever seen; more immediate than fiction because these people are real; more savage than satire because it seems to be neutral.
We are literally taken into a madhouse. Inmates of varying degrees of mental illness are treated with the same casual inhumanity. There is an old man named Jim who is constantly taunted by the guards, whose uniforms are disturbingly similar to a policeman’s. While he is being shaved with fast, painful strokes by the barber, the guards needle him: “Why’s your room so filthy, Jim? What’s that you said, Jim?” They are bullies who have their victim pinned and helpless.
When Jim is returned to his room, it is an absolutely empty cell. And Jim is naked. It appears that the inmates are deprived of clothing much of the time because that is cheaper and makes security easier. It is not explained how naked confinement in a barren cell cures mental illness and indeed this hospital seems to come from the Middle Ages.
Massachusetts legislators have tried for two years to suppress Wiseman’s film. They say it invades the privacy of the inmates, and perhaps they have a point. It is hard to imagine more humiliating and pathetic scenes, and perhaps they should not be shown for profit or offered to the public.
But perhaps they should, even though “Titicut Follies” will dismay and disgust many of those who see it. Few of us have the slightest idea of conditions in the nation’s mental prison-hospitals.
The film is not of high technical quality. It was shot with available sound and light under difficult conditions. But its message penetrates all the same. One “paranoid” patient, told he has shown no improvement, argues that the prison is making him worse, not better. This sounds like the simple truth, and the film leaves us with the impression that institutions like Bridgewater are causing mental illness, not curing it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5FFqWE6NWw

the poor, the ill, the unemployed – they’re all the same – a drain on rich peoples resources – remember this review was written in 1968 on a film that the authorities deemed ‘invaded people’s privacy’ – the authorities were blind to what was happening there and the conditions people were supposed to be ‘cared for’ – on a high street near you soon!

The rule makers are working 24 hours a day making up new rules, so of course it is hard keeping up with the new rules changed every 24 hours.

The tick box computer system is confused when it is giving a choice. Think outside of the tick box & the tick box system fails = It has To think. The workers working the tick box system are robots that have tick box rules in their job description, so when you give a human working in tick boxes choices they are confused & lost – They can not compute – If it can not compute you the client are a failure. The tick box system is a failure because it can`t compute !!

How about putting common sense in the tick box !!

The failure of saving money by all these cuts makes it counter productive. It is to feed the greed of those who gamble with tax payers money as well as public money to be a failed gamble in business & banking fraud. It is a repeat crash but much worse as we approach the real recession that is just around the corner & well before the election. Who is going to pay for this new bail out, the tax payer yet again. Do you really think the tax payer is going to bail out the banks & government ministers with shares trading with ATOS & UNUM at the DWP Town & Country PLC.

    this is no coincidence………………………………………

UNUM Provident developed a special list of “independent” medical examination physicians whom it believed would be willing to write reports denying the existence of disability. As part of this plan, Provident made agreements with outside vendors to provide referrals to IME physicians that they believed would be willing to write medical reports supporting the denial of benefits.

Thought i would give you an update of my condition since the joint theft of my subsistence by EMMA BRODRICK, a lying HCP, working for ATOS, and CHARLOTTE TRUSLER of Blackpool DWP

BRODRICK’S lies took away my Incapacity Benefit and TRUSLER’S, my Disability Living Allowance……………………

Notwithstanding, the government keep telling claimants that £71.20 is the amount of money needed to live on, yet i do not even receive this and was declared disabled for life after an accident at work…………….

My hands are riddled with rheumatoid arthritis and i have problems wiping my backside. I wear disposable pads that hide the fact i cannot hold my bladder sometimes when rising from a sitting position.
I purchase the pads and any medication i need from my own pocket, finding it cheaper than expensive prescriptions.

Since my DLA has been stopped i cannot afford these “luxuries”, and have been stuffing old newspapers down the front of my pants.
As a result of this i have become sore and developed thrush around my genitals. The tops of my legs have become red raw and a sickly sweet smell is evident.
Behind my foreskin is also red raw and i am discharging liquid. When i urinate i get a burning sensation in my penis.
I am not sure if the infection on my genitals is connected to having an ability to wipe my bottom properly, it could be a cross contamination of some kind.

i have developed bad gumboils in my mouth. I am not sure if it is to do with my genital infection or eating bad foods.
There are many fantastic adverts on our tv sets showing the finest of christmas cuisine, but this is a luxury that me and my family will never be able to afford. Todays menu will be the same as yesterday, an onion ring sandwich, and out of date at that…………………….
The physical abuse that is being directed at persons with a handicap is no joke. The biggest perpetrators are our own DWP. It seems to have developed into a national sport where the criteria seems to include, who can do the most evil to someone in dire circumstances.

No doubt there will be people just waiting to ridicule what i write, these are the people who sit back and poke fun at those in the weakest position, those not able to fight back.

Please feel free to ridicule, as it is you, and not i, who needs help badly. You have succumbed to the lowest base possible……………………….

……how strange that in the passing of a few years, the DWP have gone from a position of extolling the virtues of ATOS Health Care Professionals, to a position that they are ashamed to have anything to do with them, whatsover………………….

They were heralded from the rooftops by our con-demn government and afforded the luxury of near billion pound contracts………..

You must ask yourselves, why so much taxpayers, hard pressed income was wasted on the “BIGGEST SET OF SHYSTERS INVITED ON OUR SHORES”.

Congratulations to all of you who have stood in a unified manner to bring this injustice to a head……….

The German government tried to distance itself from the the very people they had instructed to carry out inhumane acts, this is now being seen to be followed by THE INGLORIOUS DWP…………….

They can try to erase their footprints in the sand but the heinous, evil actions against the most vulnerable will remain indelible.

No amount of compensation can bring back a loved one who has succumbed to death, as a result of our crazed welfare policies,
indeed, the Queen, our monarch, should stand trial for giving royal assent for these unsavoury actions upon her subjects.

In doing so, she signed the death warrants for those least likely to have the provision to fight back, the weakest in our society.

It’s no good waltzing around wearing ermine and pearls and unveiling plaques to yourself, while you shaft the very citizens you have been expected to protect.

The criminal actions, and i repeat, criminal actions, are being laid at the feet of the HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONERS, who, i expect, should be pursuing the complaints vigorously, as the death toll is continuing to spiral, out of control…………….

ATOS, therefore are now disgraced, but who dare pick up the mantle that would allow them to further persecute the disabled?

One thing is for sure, the DWP is now in a state of denial, a denial that was thrust upon the existence of disability of our persons.

The freedom of information galleries hold all the relevant information that the DWP has released since the inception of the
    ESA examinations.

It is a damning indictment of their collusion with a renegade company who were allowed to take lives based upon deception hidden in welfare reform, murder by decree……….

The strangest thing of all is, our government have taken no action, whatsoever, against ATOS.

……….and the reason is, they dare not…………………

In response, I can advise that the Department has not used any of its rights under the
termination or break clauses of the Medical Services Agreement.

Surely ATOS are just working under Govt instruction? Isn’t that the way they can guarantee to be paid? Yes they may find the cheapest way of offering these services but it’s govt policy and they still stand behind it.
