UNEMPLOYED HACK

A journalist’s view from the scrapheap

‘You talk a load of drizzle, Jamie Oliver’

Posted on August 27, 2013

Excuse me while I take off my pinny. I’ve been making artisan bread and some home-made pesto out of the leftover ice in my freezer.

Not affordable to a Sicilian street cleaner
Not affordable to a Sicilian street cleaner

You see, celebrity chef and once Labour school meals adviser Jamie Oliver has decided that British poverty isn’t as chic and exciting as, say, Sicilian poverty so I’m trying to change the way I approach the lack of food in the cupboard.

I won’t be angry at my job loss. I won’t be irritated by the stagnating economy. I won’t be frustrated at shrinking wages or the rising cost of living.

No, I will internalise the problem and blame myself for not realising I can make a week’s food from a slice of stale bread and an egg.

I’ll readily accept that all I need is cheaper olive oil to drizzle on an empty plate for a nutritious meal in front of my cinema-size plasma TV.

Sit down and have an olive, love
Sit down and have an olive, love

Jamie said,

You might remember that scene in Ministry Of Food, with the mum and the kid eating chips and cheese out of styrofoam containers, and behind them is a massive TV. It
just didn’t weigh up.”

“I meet people who say, ‘You don’t understand what it’s like.’ I just want to hug them and teleport them to the Sicilian street cleaner who has 25 mussels, 10 cherry tomatoes, and a packet of spaghetti for 60 pence, and knocks out the most amazing pasta.”

Ignoring the fact that Jamie Oliver’s own brand spaghetti is £1.75 …

Well, I know what it’s like Jamie. It’s soul-destroying. It’s monotonous. It’s exhausting.

And a jar of expensive pesto from your own brand range (£2.59!) isn’t going to change that.

Oh, and if you hug me I’ll punch you.

He goes on (he won’t stop!):stale bread

“The flavour comes from a cheap cut of meat, or something that’s slow-cooked, or an amazing texture’s been made out of leftover stale bread.”

So us poor no longer need to worry about hormone-injected meat or animal welfare – phew! That trend has passed – and have a constant supply of energy to fuel a slow cooker and a seemingly endless supply of leftover bread.

You think we’d eat the bread, at least?!

Anyway, I’ve no time to keep ranting.

I’m going to imagine French cuisine and see if that doesn’t fill me up before I get some money.

Cheesy Chips: The New Luxury of The Poor?

P.S. I’ve never had cheesy chips … but I really fancy some now.

There are so many things of intellectual validity I could say. Instead I’ll limit myself to a comment as basically self righteous and defamatory as his own. Do you think if someone so dense that, rather than sourcing good ‘fish fingers’ he preached to children about re-educating kids’ pallets, had a smaller tongue he’d be able to keep it in his mouth more and keep it shut?

  2. PAULA says:

ANOTHER BLOODY OUT OF TOUCH TORY TWAT, WELL ALL I CAN SAY IS STICK YOUR SAUSAGES WHERE THE SUN DON’T SHINE MATE!

    1. Robert says:

He did back the labour party he made a lot of his money through New labour and Tony Blair asking him to work on school meals. he is not a Tory Twat he is a new labour one, and if you notice with Miliband he talks about the squeezed middle class, affordable homes and the hard working, sadly they are all basically well off rich and middle class.

Miliband speech at conference what does he do tell us again about his mother and father to make out he’s well a pratt

‘There’s something deeply ironic about someone that deals in food commenting on those with empty bellies.’

Or indeed someone with £150 million quid in the bank!

    What a COMPLETE ARSEHOLE!

  4. Karen says:

Yet another Tory millionaire, so out of touch with the people he is talking about that he has no right to ‘have’ any opinion at all…… Shame on you Oliver. I hope Karma bites you where it hurts most!

  5. Trevor says:

The only time I inadvertently caught a few minutes of one of his series, the dear boy was slithering down a river embankment, revolver in hand, with which he dispatched an alligator courtesy of a bullet though the head, smirking as he did so.

Can’t say I warmed much to him after that.

  6. Greg Fester says:

Of course there are `whingers’ out there just as there are poor chefs! Problem is that Jamie tends to forget that the `whingers’ are outweighed many thousands to one, just as poor chefs are outnumbered by the good ones.

Now retired some 7 years I was lucky to find work many times over in my 49 years of employment, with only one period of 2 years without work at the time in the early eighties when hit by the recession, and that was bad enough.

Now my daughter, aged just 43, desperate for work after supporting two young sons from birth and into school, cannot find regular employment because it is being taken by foreign workers and part timers, something she has had to do herself to survive.

Jamie Oliver should remember that he is has been placed in his lofty position by the very relatives and families of the people he castigates, forgetting that the `whingers’ are a tiny minority of the unemployed. He would do well to also remember that and think hard before he opens his mouth.

Many ordinary people are going to suffer before, or if this idiot government has come to its senses. Bear in mind it took 10 years to get rid of the last twerps and they left us all broke. Being now 72 I have no fears for myself, I,ve seen and done it all but I am exceedingly worried for my kids and their families.

  7. David Moynagh says:

Big Secret is out….. Jamie Oliver’s opinions are as dull and immature as his presentation skills. Stick to making a mess of things in the kitchen son !

  8. Patrick Mcqueenie says:

Hi all, I am new to the site having just found it, if Mr Oliveoil had a brain then I just may pay attention to any comment he may make, but him being brainless I don’t pay any attention to the twat he has made the fundamental mistake of assuming that him being RICH makes him untouchable and invulnerable, this as he will find out is definitely not so, he is about to find out to his cost that Britain is made up of 99% relatively poor people at this moment in time and that Mr Oliveoil is a lot of Business that used to come your way, BOYCOT All Of THIS MORONS OVERPRICED OVERHYPED RESTAURANTS and PRODUCTS, stop buying his crap.

  9. another hard worker says:

Jamie Oliver has done more for the poor and the system than all of his left winged ney sayers put together! not only that but his critics in the right wing too .

So many morons whingeing about how hes done so well !! I work , i cook , i get good cheap ideas from jamie oliver … I lost my house in the GFC ! im not complaining , ive had to re invent myself and in doing so was inspired by jamie oliver and planted a vegie patch and herb garden at my new residence ( my mothers house) my kids garden with me cook with me and eat with me , and we do it well and for a lot less with the fresh natural ingreedients from our cheap garden .

So Thank You Mr Oliver , you should be knighted , and all you lazy whinging Turds out there that like tgrowing rocks from the safe haven of your internet ! heres one for you, get a job , get an act in your own garden and life and appreciate life snd what you do have, the message is , Life is abundant , look around you , listen , learn youll eat better and be happier .

    1. Karen M says:

To “another hard worker”, you sound very bitter about people with disabilities (unless you are blithely unaware of BT’s raison d’etre). Far from being “a lazy whingeing turd” I volunteer when my health conditions allow it, I have a small patio garden which I try to look after, I grow my own herbs and yes I appreciate life and what is around me all the more because my life expectancy will be about 15 years less than it should be. I share information, news etc in the internet community because I don’t drive or get out as much as I used to. Oh, by the way, I pay my taxes and I am fully paid up with my NI- just in case you are a Daily Mail reader.

Jamie Oliver is a TV personality among many others, he and what he offers is nothing extraordinary or new. To be honest I go back to my grandmother’s sensible “austerity” one pot recipes which date from the late 1920’s which are nutritious and easy to cook and clear-up-after.

      1. Sam says:

        Karen M;

Thank you for your characteristically calm and gentle reply.

I’m afraid that, faced with yet another contribution in what seems an almost coordinated and certainly relentless failure to understand the realities of life for so many, I just lost it for a moment.

        (Sorry, everyone.)

  14. Nigel Simmons says:

BROKEN BRITISH POLITICS-CHARITY BELONGS IN THE UK HOME
Why do people give to Charity – there are different reasons why Individuals donate to Charities but the basic factor is we have sympathy for the plight of individuals much less fortunate than ourselves.
£1 donated equates to 1p actually being received by the needy recipient whether it be in the form of Grain for food,Medical Assistance or clean water projects. Then if it reaches its destinantion un-interfered by Rebels or thieves.
Throughout the World 24 thousand men women and children die of starvation on a Daily Basis even with our contributions getting through without interference.
Charity begins at home is an old saying but true ,think of the Draconian Austerity Measures that have been introduced in the UK ,Poverty is on a par with 1913 figures.Food Banks are now a supplementary necessity for families on the Breadline because the Welfare State has abandoned them but has increased Overseas Aid by 3.4% and that diverts into Dictators Pockets.
Why are our High streets now full of Charity Shops – because it is big Business. The Savation Army Hostels are now S A PLC.The British Red Cross pay its CEO Sir Nick Young £184,000 per anum.Oxfams Lady Stocking receives £119,000 per anum the list goes on.
During adverse conditions such as War we as a Country United for a common cause, lets revive that spirit and remember many UK families are struggling through no fault of their own.We can help by donating whatever to a local Food Bank. This is not an appeal on behalf of anyone just a reminder we have a social obligation to look after our own that the Government have abandoned.
